Cost Calculation

The cost calculation covers all aspects required to make the resources available for the Compute Canada community. It includes many different areas including but not limited to:

Averaging these costs across all Compute Canada sites and systems results in the cost of providing one core year of computation to be approximately $350 and the cost of one terabyte year of storage to be $60.

By comparison, companies providing computational capabilities via a cloud or other mechanisms charge much higher rates. Doing a direct comparison is very difficult because most commercial offerings are for significantly different systems and capabilities, they generally do not include any user support and they have additional charges for data movement and other standard use cases that Compute Canada provides to all users. Computational time on its own from a commercial cloud is in the order of two or three times as expensive.
